Dr Charles Betts
I have 19 years’ experience in Fire Engineering and have been a Chartered Fire Engineer since 2015.
I completed both my Master’s degree and PhD at Imperial College London and maintain a close relationship with its Fire Science research division. This collaboration supports innovation and helps advance fire safety understanding in emerging markets and technologies.
My approach to fire safety focuses on providing options and engaging stakeholders, allowing flexibility in design. I have extensive experience delivering large mixed-use developments and building strong relationships with local authorities across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. My project portfolio includes The Shard, St Pancras International, the BBC Television Centre redevelopment, 8 Bishopsgate, multiple Canary Wharf high-rise schemes and the Design Museum.
Supporting the professional growth, technical expertise and ethical decision-making of fire engineering teams is one of the most rewarding aspects of my role.
Having grown up in several European countries, I have a passion for travel. Paris is a favourite of ours for half term escapes, with incredible ease of access from London on the Eurostar, and fantastic museums and restaurants – all very kid friendly. In the summer, you’ll find us in Puglia – the heel of Italy – enjoying the best seafood and soaking up the sun, perhaps with the occasional Aperol spritz in hand.
